Author Interview: Rachel Vincent

Today we'd like to welcome Rachel Vincent, author of the fantastic Soul Screamers YA  series which has just released in the UK.

Hi Rachel, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions, could you tell us a bit about yourself and your book My Soul to Take?

Well, I'm afraid my life is actually pretty boring. Which may have something to do with why I write fantasy. ;)

I'm thirty-two, I write full time, and I'm a cat person. Not, like, a cat-person. Just someone who loves the company of cats. I have two of them, and they have no idea they're mine, or that they're domesticated. Other than that...I can't cook, I can't draw, I can't sing, and I can't dance. I really can't do anything but write, so if this career in publishing doesn't work out...I'm in trouble. ;)

My Soul To Take is the first in my Soul Screamers series, about sixteen year old Kaylee Cavanaugh, who has no idea she's a bean sidhe (banshee). All she knows is that when someone is about to die, she gets an overwhelming urge to scream. She's a death herald, of sorts, but there's actually much more to her abilities, and much more to the world than she knows.

The Soul Screamers series is about life, and death, and friendship, and love, and loyalty, and betrayal, and coping in general. Coping with everything. There's kissing, and fighting, and battling evil. There's a little bit of everything, and these books are an absolute blast to write.

Where did the idea for The Soul Screamers series come from and what kind of research did you do?

The idea to write about bean sidhes came from a very thorough search of existing folklore. I was trying to find something interesting that hadn't already been overdone in YA/fantasy. I already knew about bean sidhes from high school and college lit classes, but when I discovered how little information actually exists in the original lore, I knew I'd found my species. I could take what was there and make up what wasn't. And it's been a lot of fun to build a whole world around this one little idea. Now there are reapers, and hellions, and nightmares (maras), as well as assorted creatures I made up entirely. Plus, of course, high school. ;)

You've written an adult paranormal series as well as The Soul Screamers series for Young Adults. How different is your approach and which is the most fun to write?

My approach doesn't really differ. It's all about the story. It's about using and manipulating words to tell a story no one else has ever told, and within those pages, harnessing human emotion. Whether in adult or YA I'd rather paint a realistic, raw picture than wrap everything up in a shiny bow. I try to tell the truth, in the guise of fantasy, and I love nothing better than when people tell me they got SO MAD at my characters--but then couldn't wait to see what happens next.

If My Soul To Take was going to be on the big screen, who would you cast as Kaylee, Nash, Emma and Tod?

I honestly have no idea. I'd love to see unknown actors in the roles. Actors who wouldn't bring any other associations to the story. That would be awesome.

If you were a character in a paranormal story, what would you be?

Human, watching all the danger unfold from the sidelines. ;)

Finally, can you give us here in the UK any little hints as to what's coming in the rest of the series (My Soul To Save, My Soul To Keep and My Soul To Steal)?

Oh, there's lots going on! Evil, jealously, good intentions, honest mistakes. There's possession, and obsession, and aggression. There's some kissing, some wish-they-were-kissing, some battling the ex-girlfriend, some saving the ex-girlfriend, and, of course, there's lots of soul-screaming. I've never had so much fun writing a series, and I hope they're fun to read too.

Thanks for having me!

You're welcome! Thanks for stopping by!

My Soul To Take was released in the UK January 2011 and My Soul To Save is due for release on the 18th February 2011 with following titles hitting book shops in April and July.
